The Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, as the principal peace agreement concluding World War I. The treaty required Germany to accept responsibility for causing the conflict, disarm, cede territory, and pay substantial reparations. It also established the League of Nations for international cooperation and collective security. The terms imposed on Germany contributed to economic distress and resentment that later facilitated the rise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party.
