On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1 from the Tyuratam launch facility in the Kazakh SSR, placing the first artificial satellite into Earth orbit. The polished aluminum sphere measured 58 centimeters in diameter, weighed 83.6 kilograms, and carried a radio transmitter that broadcast a steady signal receivable worldwide for 21 days. Sputnik 1 completed 1,440 orbits over three months before reentering the atmosphere on January 4, 1958. The launch prompted the United States to establish NASA in 1958.
