The United States Navy established McMurdo Station on the southern tip of Ross Island, Antarctica, during Operation Deep Freeze I. Built by Navy Seabees and initially designated Naval Air Facility McMurdo, the station served as the logistical hub for American operations during the International Geophysical Year of 1957-1958. Located on volcanic rock near the site of Robert Falcon Scott's 1902 Discovery expedition hut, the station became the center for US scientific and logistical activities on the continent.
