The R-7 Semyorka, the first intercontinental ballistic missile, was developed under Sergei Korolev at OKB-1 from 1954 to 1957. A two-stage, liquid-fueled rocket using Mikhail Tikhonravov's staging concept proposed in 1947, it was successfully flight-tested on August 21, 1957, from the Baikonur test range. The R-7's design proved more consequential as a space launcher than a weapon — modified variants placed Sputnik 1 into orbit and later carried Vostok, Voskhod, and Soyuz missions, making it the most prolific rocket family in spaceflight.
