Ming China Ends the Treasure Voyages and Destroys the Records

1433–1435 CE · Medieval
ExplorationPolitics

Following Admiral Zheng He's death at sea in 1433, the Xuande Emperor permanently ended China's treasure fleet program. The Confucian scholar-bureaucrat faction, opposed to the costly voyages, systematically destroyed official records, navigational charts, and logbooks from all seven expeditions. The fleet was dismantled and ships left to deteriorate. Within decades, China made building large oceangoing vessels illegal. China withdrew from the Indian Ocean as European powers began their maritime expansion. The archival destruction means Zheng He's routes, discoveries, and diplomatic achievements remain only partially reconstructed from fragmentary surviving sources.
