On August 3, 1492, Christopher Columbus departed the port of Palos de la Frontera in southwestern Spain with three ships — the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa María — carrying approximately 90 crew members. Commissioned by King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella I of Castile to find a western sea route to Asia, the expedition stopped at the Canary Islands for repairs and resupply before sailing west into uncharted Atlantic waters on September 6.
