In 1405, Admiral Zheng He departed Nanjing commanding a fleet of approximately 300 vessels and 27,000 crew, dispatched by the Yongle Emperor to project Ming Dynasty power across the Indian Ocean. Over seven voyages spanning three decades, the fleet reached Southeast Asia, India, the Persian Gulf, and the East African coast. The voyages established tributary trade relationships and demonstrated Chinese naval capability decades before European oceanic exploration began. The Ming court abruptly ended the voyages in the 1430s, withdrawing from maritime expansion.
