First Electrical AC System Invented

1902 AD · 20th Century
Technology

In 1887-1888, Nikola Tesla developed a complete polyphase alternating current system comprising generators, transformers, transmission lines, and motors. Tesla filed patents for his AC induction motor and polyphase power system in 1888. George Westinghouse licensed Tesla's patents and demonstrated AC power distribution at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The Niagara Falls hydroelectric project, operational in 1896, became the first large-scale AC power transmission system, delivering electricity to Buffalo, New York, 26 miles away.
