On January 28, 1547, King Henry VIII died at the Palace of Whitehall in London at the age of 55. He had reigned for over 37 years (1509-1547) and was known for breaking away from the Catholic Church to establish the Church of England, developing the Royal Navy, dissolving monasteries, and having six wives. His nine-year-old son, Edward VI, succeeded him.
