The Epic of Gilgamesh, one of the oldest known literary works, was composed in ancient Mesopotamia. The earliest Sumerian poems about Gilgamesh date to around 2100 BCE. These stories were later compiled into a longer Akkadian epic that evolved over centuries, with the most complete version compiled by the scribe Sîn-lēqi-unninni between 1300-1000 BCE.
