Queen Elizabeth I, daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, died at Richmond Palace on March 24, 1603. Her death at age 69 marked the end of the Tudor dynasty after a 45-year reign known as England's "Golden Age." She was succeeded by James VI of Scotland, who became James I of England, uniting the crowns and beginning the Stuart era.
