Leonardo da Vinci painted The Last Supper on the north wall of the refectory in the Dominican Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan between 1495 and 1498. Commissioned by Duke Ludovico Sforza, the 4.6 by 8.8 meter wall painting depicts the moment Jesus announces his betrayal, with each apostle reacting individually. Leonardo used an experimental oil-and-tempera technique on dry plaster rather than traditional fresco, which began deteriorating within decades. The site was designated a UNESCO World Heritage location in 1980.
