On August 17, 1945, two days after Japan's surrender, Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta proclaimed Indonesian independence in Jakarta, ending approximately 350 years of Dutch colonial presence. The Netherlands refused to recognize the proclamation and launched two military offensives (1947, 1948) to reassert control. International pressure, including a US threat to withhold Marshall Plan aid from the Netherlands, compelled Dutch recognition. Full sovereignty was formally transferred on December 27, 1949 at the Round Table Conference in The Hague. Indonesia became a unitary republic encompassing over 17,000 islands and approximately 70 million people.
