Japan formally surrendered to Allied forces on September 2, 1945 aboard USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, ending World War II in the Pacific. US-led occupation under General Douglas MacArthur (1945–1952) enacted land reform, introduced a pacifist constitution, and broke up zaibatsu industrial conglomerates. Korean War procurement orders (1950) revived Japanese heavy industry. Prime Minister Yoshida Shigeru's doctrine of minimal defense spending directed national resources into industrial development. Between 1957 and 1973 Japan's GNP grew at approximately 10% annually; by 1968 Japan ranked as the world's second-largest economy by GDP.
