Stegosaurus was a genus of armored dinosaur from the Late Jurassic period, approximately 155 to 150 million years ago. It was characterized by the distinctive rows of large bony plates along its back and spiked tail. The first fossils were discovered in 1877 in the Morrison Formation near Morrison, Colorado, by Arthur Lakes and were later described by paleontologist Othniel Charles Marsh.
