On May 25, 2020, George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, died in Minneapolis, Minnesota after police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for nine minutes and twenty-nine seconds during an arrest. The killing was filmed by bystanders and broadcast globally. Floyd's death triggered the largest protest movement in American history, with demonstrations in all fifty states and over sixty countries. Derek Chauvin was convicted of murder in April 2021 — a rare criminal conviction of a police officer — in a trial that became a landmark in the history of police accountability in the United States.
