In 1259, Ilkhanid ruler Hulagu Khan established the Maragha Observatory in northwestern Iran under director Nasir al-Din al-Tusi. The observatory housed a library with thousands of volumes and attracted astronomers from across Eurasia, including Chinese astronomers who introduced East Asian techniques. The institution produced the Zij-i Ilkhani astronomical handbook with planetary calculations. Al-Tusi developed mathematical innovations such as the 'Tusi couple.' The work at Maragha may have influenced European astronomy and contributed to Copernicus's development of heliocentrism.
