On July 14, 2015, Iran and the P5+1 (United States, United Kingdom, France, Russia, China, and Germany) plus the European Union finalized the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in Vienna. Iran agreed to reduce its enriched uranium stockpile by 98 percent, limit enrichment to 3.67 percent purity, and accept enhanced IAEA inspections. In exchange, participating states agreed to lift nuclear-related sanctions. The IAEA verified Iranian compliance on January 16, 2016, triggering sanctions relief. The agreement functioned as a political commitment rather than a ratified treaty.
