Jayavarman II Establishes the Khmer Empire

802 CE · Late Antiquity
PoliticsCulture

In 802 CE, Jayavarman II conducted a consecration ritual on Mount Mahendraparvata (present-day Phnom Kulen) in which the brahmin Hiranyadama proclaimed him chakravartin under the devaraja cult. This ceremony, recorded in the 11th-century Sdok Kak Thom inscription, declared independence from Javanese suzerainty. Jayavarman II had previously unified the successor states of the former Chenla kingdom through military campaigns across the Mekong region, establishing capitals at Indrapura, Hariharalaya, and Mahendraparvata. The Khmer Empire he founded persisted until approximately 1431 CE.
