10th-13th century · Medieval
Mathematics

Arabic numerals were introduced to Europe around the 10th century, but were popularized by Italian mathematician Leonardo of Pisa (Fibonacci) through his influential book Liber Abaci published in 1202. This revolutionary system, originating from India and transmitted through the Arab world, gradually replaced Roman numerals and transformed European mathematics, commerce, and science.
