Adelard of Bath Translates Euclid's Elements from Arabic

c. 1120 · Medieval
MathematicsLanguage

English scholar Adelard of Bath produced the earliest surviving Latin translation of Euclid's Elements, working from an Arabic version derived from al-Hajjaj's translation. Having traveled through Sicily, Antioch, and other Mediterranean regions where he learned Arabic, Adelard rendered all fifteen books into Latin. He created three separate versions of the translation. This work reintroduced Euclidean geometry to Western Europe and became the standard geometry textbook for centuries.
