Holy League Fleet Defeats Ottoman Navy at Lepanto

October 7, 1571 · Early Modern
WarPoliticsReligion

A coalition fleet organized by Pope Pius V and commanded by Don Juan of Austria engaged the Ottoman navy under Muezzinzade Ali Pasha in the Gulf of Patras off western Greece. Approximately 400 galleys and galleasses fought in one of the largest naval engagements since antiquity. The Holy League, comprising Venetian, Spanish, Papal, and allied squadrons, destroyed or captured most of the Ottoman fleet. The battle halted Ottoman naval expansion in the central Mediterranean, though the empire rebuilt its fleet within a year and retained control of Cyprus.
