In 1206, Islamic polymath Ismail al-Jazari described the elephant clock in his Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices, commissioned by the Artuqid court. The water-powered timepiece used a sinking-bowl mechanism derived from Indian engineering. It featured automata triggered at timed intervals — a humanoid figure striking cymbals and a mechanical bird chirping. Al-Jazari incorporated design elements from Indian, Chinese, Persian, Greek, and Islamic traditions, making it a deliberate synthesis of multicultural engineering.
