On October 21, 1805, a British fleet of 27 ships of the line under Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson engaged a combined Franco-Spanish fleet of 33 ships commanded by Vice Admiral Pierre-Charles Villeneuve off Cape Trafalgar, Spain. The British captured or destroyed 22 enemy vessels without losing a single ship. Nelson was fatally wounded by a musket ball during the engagement. The outcome ended Napoleon's plans for a cross-Channel invasion of Britain and established British naval dominance for the following century.
