Leo Tolstoy's historical novel was first serialized in the Russian periodical Russkiy Vestnik between 1865 and 1867 under the title "1805," then published in complete book form in 1869. Spanning the Napoleonic Wars from 1805 to 1820, it follows five aristocratic Russian families across approximately 1,225 pages and 580 characters. Tolstoy's wife Sophia copied as many as seven complete manuscripts during revision. The novel blends fictional narratives with historical accounts of battles including Austerlitz and Borodino.
