Around 3100 BCE, King Narmer (also identified as Menes) united Upper and Lower Egypt, establishing the First Dynasty and creating the world's first nation-state. This unification, commemorated on the Narmer Palette discovered at Hierakonpolis, marked the beginning of ancient Egyptian civilization and the Early Dynastic Period. Narmer established Memphis as the capital of unified Egypt and introduced the double crown symbolizing rule over both regions.
