PoliticsWar

In 711 AD, forces from the Umayyad Caliphate led by the Berber general Tariq ibn Ziyad crossed the Strait of Gibraltar and invaded the Visigothic Kingdom of Hispania. After defeating King Roderic at the Battle of Guadalete, the Muslim forces rapidly conquered most of the Iberian Peninsula. This conquest established Islamic rule in the region, known as al-Andalus, which lasted in varying extents until 1492.
