Treasure Island, an adventure novel by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson, was first published in book form by Cassell & Company in London. The story, which was originally serialized in Young Folks magazine from 1881 to 1882 under the pseudonym 'Captain George North', narrates a tale of buccaneers and buried gold. It has become one of the most influential works on popular perceptions of pirates, introducing elements like treasure maps marked with an 'X', the Black Spot, and one-legged seamen with parrots on their shoulders.
