The Three Kingdoms period officially began in 220 AD when Cao Pi forced Emperor Xian to abdicate, ending the Eastern Han dynasty. China was then divided into three states: Wei in the north, Shu Han in the southwest, and Wu in the southeast. This division lasted until 280 AD when the Jin dynasty reunified China.
