In 261 BCE, Roman forces under consuls Lucius Postumius Megellus and Quintus Mamilius Vitulus fought the first major pitched battle of the First Punic War at Agrigentum in Sicily. After a siege beginning in 262 BCE, Carthage dispatched a relief force of approximately 50,000 infantry, 6,000 cavalry, and 60 elephants under Hanno. The Romans defeated this force, capturing the Carthaginian baggage train and elephants, though the garrison escaped overnight. The Roman Senate denied both consuls a triumph, citing the prolonged siege and the garrison's escape.
