September 30, 1520 CE · Early Modern
PoliticsReligionWarLaw

Suleiman I ascended to the Ottoman throne on September 30, 1520, beginning a 46-year reign. He conquered Belgrade, Rhodes, and most of Hungary, besieged Vienna, captured Iraq from Safavid Persia, and established Ottoman naval dominance across the Mediterranean. His legal reforms codified law blending Islamic jurisprudence with administrative practice. Architect Mimar Sinan built the Süleymaniye Mosque under his patronage. Suleiman extended his father's claim to the Islamic Caliphate, presenting himself as protector of Islam. His reign brought the Ottoman Empire to its maximum territorial and cultural extent.
