Schabowski's Mistaken Press Conference Announcement

November 9, 1989 · 20th Century
Politics

East German Politburo spokesman Gunter Schabowski held a televised press conference at the International Press Center in East Berlin. Shortly before appearing, Egon Krenz handed him a note outlining new travel regulations intended for release the following morning. When Italian journalist Riccardo Ehrman asked when the rules took effect, Schabowski shuffled his papers and replied, "Immediately, without delay." West German television broadcast the statement across both Germanys, prompting thousands of East Berliners to mass at border checkpoints that evening.
