Salic Law (Lex Salica)

c. 500 CE · Late Antiquity
LawPoliticsCulture

The Salic Law (Lex Salica) was a Frankish civil law code compiled around 500 CE during Clovis I's reign, the first king to unite all Frankish tribes. Written in Latin with Germanic terms, it established legal framework covering criminal penalties, property rights, and inheritance. The code excluded women from inheriting land, a clause later cited as basis for excluding women from royal succession in France. The legal text influenced many European legal systems and remained in use for centuries, providing documentation of early Germanic society and Frankish governance structures.
