The Republic of China was officially proclaimed on January 1, 1912, following the success of the Xinhai Revolution that began with the Wuchang Uprising on October 10, 1911. Sun Yat-sen served as the first provisional president in Nanjing, while the last Qing emperor Puyi abdicated on February 12, 1912. The revolution ended over 2,000 years of imperial rule in China and established the first republic in Asia.
