K'inich Janaab' Pakal assumed the throne of Palenque at age 12 and ruled for 68 years until his death at age 80 (615-683 CE). Lady Sak K'uk' served as regent during his early reign, and Lady Tzakbu Ajaw was his queen consort. Under Pakal's leadership, Palenque expanded from a previously defeated city into a major Maya center. He commissioned architectural projects including the Temple of the Inscriptions, which became his tomb. Pakal formed strategic alliances and expanded Palenque's political influence. His reign produced a distinctive artistic and architectural style characteristic of Maya culture.
