In 219 BC, one year after unifying China, Emperor Qin Shi Huang performed the sacred Fengshan sacrifices at Mount Tai, formally proclaiming his imperial status to heaven and earth. This solemn ceremony involved sacrifices at the summit for heaven and at the base for earth, and included the erection of a stone monument with inscriptions detailing his accomplishments as emperor.
