On November 4, 1980, former California Governor Ronald Reagan defeated incumbent President Jimmy Carter in the U.S. presidential election by a decisive margin. Reagan won 489 electoral votes to Carter's 49, marking one of the largest electoral victories in U.S. history. The election also saw Republicans gain control of the Senate for the first time since 1954.
