Byzantine philosopher Georgios Gemistos Plethon traveled to Italy as part of the Eastern Orthodox delegation to the Council of Ferrara-Florence, convened to reunite the Christian churches. While in Florence, he lectured to Italian humanists on Plato's philosophy, reintroducing Platonic thought to Western Europe after centuries of Aristotelian dominance. His presentations influenced Cosimo de' Medici, who later patronized Marsilio Ficino's translations of Plato and the establishment of the Platonic Academy in 1462.
