The Pequot War (1636-1638) was fought between the Pequot people and English colonists from the Massachusetts Bay, Plymouth, and Saybrook colonies, allied with Mohegan and Narragansett fighters. Tensions over fur trade control and the killing of English trader John Oldham escalated into open conflict. On May 26, 1637, colonial forces led by Captain John Mason burned the Pequot fort at Mystic, killing an estimated 400 to 700 inhabitants. The Treaty of Hartford (1638) dispersed surviving Pequots, prohibited use of their tribal name, and redistributed their territory among the colonists and allied tribes.
