La Venta became the principal Olmec ceremonial center around 900 BCE following the decline of San Lorenzo. The site featured a large earthen pyramid (Complex C or "The Great Pyramid"), standing 34 meters high, alongside elaborate plaza spaces, stone monuments, and ritual offerings. As one of the earliest major pyramid structures in Mesoamerica, La Venta established architectural patterns that would influence later civilizations throughout the region until its abandonment around 400 BCE.
