On February 18, 2021, NASA's Perseverance rover landed in Jezero Crater, a 45-kilometer-wide basin containing an ancient river delta, after launching on July 30, 2020. The rover carried instruments to analyze geology, search for biosignatures in sedimentary rock, and cache samples for future Earth return. It also deployed Ingenuity, a 1.8-kilogram helicopter that performed the first powered, controlled flight on another planet on April 19, 2021.
