In 1866, Gregor Johann Mendel published his paper "Experiments on Plant Hybridization" (Versuche über Pflanzenhybriden) in the journal of the Brno Natural History Society. Based on experiments with pea plants conducted from 1856-1863, he discovered fundamental principles of inheritance, including dominant and recessive traits. Though largely unrecognized until 1900, his work became the foundation for the science of genetics.
