Mehrgarh emerged as one of the earliest agricultural settlements in South Asia, located in what is now Balochistan, Pakistan. Inhabitants constructed mud-brick buildings, developed farming of wheat and barley, and domesticated sheep, goats, and cattle. The site also yielded evidence of sophisticated craft production including the earliest known proto-dentistry, stone tool manufacturing, and ceramic figurines. Mehrgarh represents a crucial transitional site demonstrating the independent development of farming in the Indian subcontinent and shows technological sophistication that would later influence the Indus Valley Civilization.
