Namecoin was launched on April 18, 2011, by the pseudonymous developer Vincent Durham as the first fork of Bitcoin and the first altcoin. Introduced on the BitcoinTalk forum, Namecoin was designed as a decentralized domain name system (DNS) that enabled users to register and control .bit domains without centralized authorities. It combined blockchain technology with naming systems, allowing data storage within its own blockchain.
