Between approximately 4.0 and 3.8 billion years ago, Earth experienced intense asteroid and comet impacts known as the Late Heavy Bombardment. Evidence from impact craters on the Moon and other solar system bodies supports this period, which marks the transition from the Hadean to the Archean Eon. These impacts delivered water and organic compounds to Earth. Recent studies suggest the impacts may have created hydrothermal environments that provided refuge for early life forms and accelerated chemical evolution. This period shaped Earth's geology and chemical composition.
