In 1812, Pierre-Simon Laplace published Theorie analytique des probabilites in Paris, consolidating and extending probability theory into a systematic mathematical framework. The treatise contained Laplace formulation of the central limit theorem, his rediscovery and generalization of Bayes theorem for inverse probability, and the method of least squares applied to observational data. Laplace applied probabilistic analysis to problems in astronomy, demography, and legal testimony. The work appeared in subsequent editions in 1814, 1820, and 1825.
