Construction of the Temple of Amun at Karnak began during the Middle Kingdom of ancient Egypt, with Pharaoh Senusret I (r. 1971-1926 BCE) building the first significant limestone temple on the site. Located near Thebes (modern Luxor), it would eventually become the largest religious complex in ancient Egypt, dedicated to the gods Amun, Mut, and Khonsu.
