JNIM Founded — al-Qaeda Unifies Sahel Affiliates

March 2017 · 21st Century
WarPolitics

In March 2017, four jihadist organizations merged to form Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM). The merger united al-Qaeda in the Maghreb, Ansar Dine, Al-Murabitun, and Katiba Macina under Malian Tuareg leader Iyad Ag Ghali. JNIM became al-Qaeda's formal Sahel affiliate, stating objectives to expel Western influence, establish sharia-based governance, and expand across West Africa. By 2025 JNIM accounted for the majority of violent incidents in Mali and had extended operations into Burkina Faso, Niger, Togo, Benin, and Côte d'Ivoire.
