2nd century BCE · Classical Antiquity
AstronomyTechnology

The astrolabe, an ancient astronomical tool, was invented between 220 and 150 BC by Apollonius of Perga in the Hellenistic civilization, and is often credited to Hipparchus. This instrument has been widely used throughout history to determine the altitude of celestial bodies, identify stars and planets, and triangulate. It was used during classical antiquity, the Islamic Golden Age, the European Middle Ages, and the Age of Discovery.
