Introduction of Buddhism to Japan

552 CE · Late Antiquity
ReligionCulturePolitics

In 552 CE, King Seong of Baekje sent a diplomatic mission to Emperor Kinmei of Japan, delivering Buddhist scriptures, a bronze Buddha statue, and ritual objects. Some sources suggest this occurred in 538 CE. The religion initially encountered resistance from traditionalist clans supporting Shinto beliefs but gained support from the Soga clan. This transmission initiated religious, artistic, and political changes as Buddhism gradually integrated into Japanese society.
